LEGO models at Discovery Brick Show 2023 in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Another weekend, another LEGO fan event in the UK! This time we headed north to Discovery Brick Show in Newcastle upon Tyne for a weekend of model displays and activities for the public.

Hosted by Brick Alley LEGO User Group in the North East of England, Discovery Brick Show is set in the stunning old Cooperative Society offices in Newcastle city centre, which is now home to Discovery Museum. The museum is home to many exhibits including a brilliant history of Newcastle, as well as the hard-to-miss Turbinia – once the fastest ship on the world!

Our pick of favourite LEGO models from Discovery Brick Show 2023

There was a nice variety of themes and styles of model on display at Discovery Brick Show, including vintage LEGO town sets and trains, superb interactive displays from Steve at Spot The Brick including a hands-on unicorn racing game, and large dioramas featuring dinosaurs, super heroes and more.

Here are some of our favourite models from the show.

Wonderful Joe’s DUPLO mecha

These models showcase everything brilliant about LEGO modelling – a creative, fun blend of themes and parts. Mixing LEGO and DUPLO parts, “Wonderful Joe” has created a series of beautiful mecha – including – yes, that’s right – a Winnie The Pooh LEGO / DUPLO mecha model.

Sally’s LEGO elf garden

Sally has a theme when it comes to building – “crazy fairy gardens” – and this is no exception. The foliage and huge, beautifully made tree are superb, and the little humour scenes involving the planet’s elves spread throughout the diorama made this build the envy of many adult LEGO fan builders at Discovery, wanting hints on creating similarly impressive trees!

Gordon’s Borg Cube from Star Trek

LEGO Star Trek Borg Cube by Gordon Finlay at Discovery Brick Show.

Gordon Finlay’s gloriously greebled Borg Cube built in LEGO bricks was definitely an eye-catcher at Discovery. Definitely one for Star Trek fans.

Keen readers of the Bricks McGee blog may spot that Gordon’s architectural models were a highlight of the Bricktastic 2023 event in Manchester earlier in the year!

If you’re a LEGO fan in Newcastle or the North East of England, and missed out on the event this year, look out for Discovery Brick Show 2024 (see our 2024 LEGO fan events list for the UK and Ireland) next May!
